The American Civil War was a very important time period in our nation's history. Lasting from 1861-1865, it solidified
the Union and allowed the government to act as a whole. Also, it was an important event for slavery. With Lincoln's Emancipation
Proclamation, slavery was outlawed in the South. This ushered in the later Civil Rights movement 100 years later.
The American Civil War was the bloodiest war in American history. Costing over 600,000 lives and another 400,000 wounded,
it was worse than both of the World Wars combined. Aside from the great personal losses, there were also significant
financial losses. Nearly 9 billion dollars were spent upon the war effort, almost 25 billion in today's money.
